The Haïtian Consortium
is shocked and deeply saddened by the news that a
school, located near Pétionville, a suburb of
Port-au-Prince, and populated by a student body of
nearly 700, has collapsed suddenly this morning while
classes were in session. The death toll has risen to 30
so far, and is expected to grow. Dozens more of
seriously wounded students, teachers and other adults
have been taken to area hospitals.
The Haitian Consortium
has already deployed a team of 20 volunteers, well
trained members of its Rapid Deployment Disaster
Response Team, to participate in the on-going Search and
Rescue operation. In addition, the Haitian Consortium
has made available, immediately, monetary funds to
assist the families of the victims. More targeted
assistance will follow soon, including Grief
Specialists, to help victims and their families face the
trauma and losses generated by this tragedy.
The Haitian Consortium
shares the sorrow of all who lost loved ones, expresses
its condolences, and offers its prayers and comfort to
families and friends affected by this tragic event.
The Haitian Consortium
calls on the Preval administration to deploy, without
delay, Construction Safety Code Inspectors to insure
that school buildings are safe for our children, our
most valuable national resource.
